    Birdwatching
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a premier location for a wide array of birds - and for people who enjoy watching them. The crest of the Smokies towers nearly a mile above the foothills, creating a range in elevations and a variety of topographies that provide a diversity of habitats and microclimates for birds.

From the high, exposed peaks, to the warmer, sheltered lowlands, some 240 species of birds have been found in the park. Sixty species are year-round residents. Nearly 120 species breed in the park, including 52 species from the neo-tropics. Many other species use the park as an important stopover and foraging area during their semiannual migration.

Changes in elevation affect the types of vegetation that grow in the mountains and determine where many birds can be found. Some species are found only in distinct habitats at certain elevations, while others may range over several habitats.
    Whitewater Rafting
There's nothing quite as exhilarating as a ride on an untamed river. There are many outfitters that conduct guided trips down the Big Pigeon and other regional rivers.
    Camping
We have three local campgrounds in Gatlinburg to choose from. They have many amenities such as electricity, water, cable TV, hot showers, pools, and much more. The national park also has several campgrounds, including Cosby and Elkmont, where you can pitch a tent and rough it for a few days in the wilderness. Some campgrounds accept reservations, but most are accessible on a first come, first served basis.

    Visitation
Located within a two-day drive for half of the nation's population, Great Smoky Mountains National Park has thehighest visitation of all the national parks in the country. There are between eight and ten million visits to Smoky Mountain's National Park annually. Educational programs offered by rangers, interpretive displays located at the visitor centers, and roadside exhibits explain the unique aspects of the park so that visitors may better understand the area. More importantly, these programs stress why it is crucial to preserve environments such as the Great Smoky Mountains.
    Diversity
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the largest protected land areas east of the Rocky Mountains. With over 500,000 acres of forest, the Smoky Mountains contain an enormous variety of plants and animals. In terms of biological diversity, a walk from mountain base to peak is often compared to the 2,000 mile hike on the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine.
    Cultural History
The Smoky Mountains also have a rich cultural history. Cherokee Indians moved into the Smoky Mountain area about 1,000 years ago, and permanent white settlement began around 1800. Most families depended on farming for their livelihood. Life for many of these families changed with the coming of commercial logging operations around 1900 that stripped trees from three-quarters of what is now park land. Established in 1934, Smoky Mountain National Park was created from more than 6,000 tracts of private and commercial land that were bought with money raised by public and private donations.

    Endemic Species
The Smoky Mountains provide the only habitat in the world for several plant and animal species, including Cain's reed-bent grass, Rugel's ragwort, and Jordan's (red-cheeked) salamander. Species new to the scientific community are found nearly every year, especially in the lesser-studied groups, such as the invertebrates.
    Flora
During the Ice Age, the Smoky Mountains were a refuge for hundreds of plant and animal species retreating before the glaciers. These species found suitable living conditions in the upper elevations of the Smoky Mountains. Because the Smokey Mountains National park contains a variety of habitats, it is now home for some 1,500 species of vascular plants, 10% of which are considered rare, and well over 4,000 non-flowering plant species.
