| Birdwatching Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a premier location for a wide array of birds - and for people who enjoy watching them. The crest of the Smokies towers nearly a mile above the foothills, creating a range in elevations and a variety of topographies that provide a diversity of habitats and microclimates for birds.
From the high, exposed peaks, to the warmer, sheltered lowlands, some 240 species of birds have been found in the park. Sixty species are year-round residents. Nearly 120 species breed in the park, including 52 species from the neo-tropics. Many other species use the park as an important stopover and foraging area during their semiannual migration.
Changes in elevation affect the types of vegetation that grow in the mountains and determine where many birds can be found. Some species are found only in distinct habitats at certain elevations, while others may range over several habitats.
| Winter Sports Ober Gatlinburg is Tennessee's only ski resort. Its eight ski slopes range from beginning to advanced and lie 3000 feet above sea level. Using a combination of natural and man-made snow, visitors can ski and snowboard. There's even an indoor ice-skating rink that's great fun rain or shine or snow. Even if you don't ski or skate, come up and enjoy the spectacular view or relax over a delicious hot meal at Ober Gatlinburg's restaurant.

| Horseback Riding Saddle up, pardners, and see our beautiful East Tennessee countryside the old-fashioned way. Places like Smoky Mountain Stables & Sugarlands Riding Stables offer guided, back country excursions for kids and grownups alike.
| Golf If you're a golfer looking for a challenge, how about a game of mountain golf? The rules are the same as golf everywhere, but the course is just a little bit different. It's up and down, up and down, with hardly a flat spot to be found. It'll be an experience to be remembered with a scenic background that is magnificent. Try out your skill on the greens of the Gatlinburg Golf Course or the Bent Creek Golf Course.
| Whitewater Rafting There's nothing quite as exhilarating as a ride on an untamed river. There are many outfitters that conduct guided trips down the Big Pigeon and other regional rivers.

| Cultural History The Smoky Mountains also have a rich cultural history. Cherokee Indians moved into the Smoky Mountain area about 1,000 years ago, and permanent white settlement began around 1800. Most families depended on farming for their livelihood. Life for many of these families changed with the coming of commercial logging operations around 1900 that stripped trees from three-quarters of what is now park land. Established in 1934, Smoky Mountain National Park was created from more than 6,000 tracts of private and commercial land that were bought with money raised by public and private donations.
| Endemic Species The Smoky Mountains provide the only habitat in the world for several plant and animal species, including Cain's reed-bent grass, Rugel's ragwort, and Jordan's (red-cheeked) salamander. Species new to the scientific community are found nearly every year, especially in the lesser-studied groups, such as the invertebrates.
| Trees The Smoky Mountains National Park has more tree species than northern Europe and contains one of the largest blocks of virgin temperate deciduous forest in North America. Almost 95% of the Smokey Mountain's National Park is forested, and about 25% of that area has not been disturbed. Some trees attain record size in the Smoky Mountains and are over 20 feet in circumference.

| Biosphere Reserve The Smoky Mountain National Park is designated as an International Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations. The international system contains 324 reserves in 82 countries with the primary objectives of conserving genetic diversity and coordinating environmental education, research, and monitoring. The park is also a unit of the Southern Appalachian Man and Biosphere Reserve cluster. This membership enhances Smokey Mountain National park's commitment to cooperative efforts in environmental education, research, resource management, and public involvement. The park's designation as a World Heritage Site and a State Natural Heritage Area by Tennessee and North Carolina reinforces the value of its natural and cultural resources.
| Monitoring To better manage its unique flora and fauna, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, in cooperation with The Nature Conservancy, became the first national park in the country to set up a Natural Heritage Data Center. The Natural Heritage Program gives the park the ability to inventory and monitor its rare plants, animals, and ecosystems.
